About this course

This course invited New York City high school students to read one short story a week, Chekhov, O'Connor, and others, and explore it together in an open, thoughtful atmosphere.

Through attentive reading and careful listening, students practiced habits that help stop everyday misunderstandings before they turn into real conflict.

What we read, watched, and listened to

  1. A Late Encounter With the Enemy

A tale about a failing teacher who fails both herself and others. Dark, funny, and incisive about what teaching should not be.

    Text
  2. Alcibiades I

A classic introduction to Plato, the dialogue beautifully argues about the importance of relationships to others as opposed to personal ambition.

    Text
  3. The Teacher of Literature

Young teacher comes to realize his new marriage may have a rather horrifying underbelly.
