A seminar for Afghan girls banned from school
Fatima · Afghanistan
Read
Faulkner’s “Barn Burning” stayed with Fatima, especially the moment Sarty decides to stand against what he believes is unfair.
Discuss
In a core group discussion, a classmate’s very different reading made Fatima rethink, for the first time, an idea held with complete certainty.
Sit with it
Under the Taliban, Afghan girls are banned from school beyond grade six. Fatima, one of them, kept asking: if Sarty chose not to stay silent, what could I do?
Act
Fatima ran a seminar for a small group of girls in her community who were out of school, on why education matters and where to find online schools. Several have since started at an online school. Faces are blurred for everyone’s safety.
I understood that even small actions can make positive changes in people’s lives and our community.
